Calumet Stampmill Site is located at 53150 Highway M-26, Lake Linden, Houghton County, Michigan 49945. The site is a former ore processing facility currently owned by the Houghton County Historical Museum Society.
Investigations by EPA and Michigan DEQ have confirmed the presence of asbestos on and around the stampmill bases.
Honeywell Specialty Materials LLC and the Houghton County Historical Museum Society have agreed to clean up the asbestos debris under an agreement with EPA. That cleanup by Honeywell Specialty Materials LLC and the Houghton County Historical Museum Society is scheduled to begin at the end of October 2016.
EPA has advised the Historical Museum Society, owners of the property, to restrict access to the site, to place warning signs at the perimeter, and to stop train rides at the property until they complete the cleanup.
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry website has more information about the health effects of asbestos: http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/substances/toxsubstance.asp?toxid=4
