On Wednesday, February 14th 2018, Region 10’s Emergency Management Program received a referral from the EPA Criminal Investigation Division (CID) related to a potential release of lead-based paint from the KIRO News telecommunications tower in a densely populated neighborhood in Seattle, WA. CID received several complaints from neighbors surrounding the tower, which was undergoing repairs and maintenance work, documenting a significant amount of what appeared to be pieces of paint on private and public property, including sidewalks, and streets. The company performing the restoration work on the tower filed a Paint Health Protection Plan with their permit and identified the presence of paint containing lead material. The tower is within a couple hundred feet of residential properties and 2 ½ blocks from an elementary school.
