The U.S. EPA is requesting public input on the Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) for the Viburnum Trend Lead Haul Roads Superfund Site, Operable Unit 2 (OU2), also known as the St. Joe Minerals Corp. - City of Viburnum Site. The EE/CA was produced to determine appropriate alternatives for a potential removal action at the Site, which includes the City of Viburnum and nearby areas.
Lead contamination is known to exist in the shallow soils of residential properties and child high-use areas, which was likely distributed throughout the Site during decades of mining, milling, and transporting of ores and concentrates. Lead is a toxic metal that is harmful if inhaled or swallowed. Lead is classified by U.S. EPA as a probably human carcinogen and is a cumulative toxicant that affects multiple body systems and particularly harmful to young children.
The Administrative Record (AR) File is available in the documents section of this website, and include the EE/CA and all technical documents that led EPA to the decision to produce the EE/CA for this Site. The AR File is also available at https://www.epa.gov/superfund/vtlhrou2.
Public comments on the EE/CA will be accepted from March 18, 2020 through April 17, 2020.
Oral comments may be submitted to a voicemail box that can be reached at 913-551-8755.
Written comments, questions about the EE/CA, and requests for information can be directed to Elizabeth Kramer, Community Involvement Coordinator, by email at kramer.elizabeth@epa.gov. She can also be reached by phone at 913-551-7186 and toll-free at 1-800-223-0425.
