On April 10, 2008, ERRS completed the cleanup of the creek. On April 10, 2008 ERRS began the cleanup of the Upper Bell Pond. The plastic cover on the pond was removed and piled in the corner of the pond. Five 70-barrel loads of oil and water have been removed to an on-site storage tank for temporary disposal. Due to the amount of solids and water in the oil, recycling it is unfeasible and not cost effective. The oil will be disposed of off-site. ERRS conducted bench studies with peralite to solidify the solids.
1. Remove the contents of the upper Bell pond. 2. Clean the upper Bell pond walls. 3. Bind or remove all pipes entering the pond. 4. Conduct exploratory trenching under the pond to determine if subsurface contamination exist. If subsurface contamination is found, it will be removed. 5. Backfill the pond with clean fill.
On April 2, 2008, EPA met with the CADFG biologist to discuss restoration and excavation issues. The restoration plan will be done by the START in cooperation with CADFG biologist.
The T&D RFP has been sent out. The determination on where the material will be disposed will be determed by ERRS next week.
The cleanup is expected to be completed by late April or early May.
Data provided by Greka on the constitents of the Bell Lease crude oil documents the presence of the sample compounds as found in the March 5, 2008 START data. The solids meet the requirements of the RCRA Exploration and Production Exemption.
