The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced the addition of the BoRit Asbestos Site in Ambler, PA. to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL).

The National Priorities List is a national list of sites where hazardous contaminants could impact public health and/or the environment. NPL sites undergo a thorough investigation to determine the full nature and extent of contamination. EPA or the parties responsible for the contamination then address whatever risks the sites pose to human health and the environment.

The BoRit site was proposed for NPL listing in Sept. 2008, which was followed by a 60-day comment period. The final decision on the listing comes after EPA has evaluated and responded to all the public comments in writing.

Asbestos in yards
****************************************************************************************************************
Some residents have expressed concern about the fact/possibility of having asbestos in their yards. The primary concern regarding asbestos exposure is with airborne asbestos fibers entering the body through inhalation, as opposed to dermal contact or ingestion. Therefore, as long as the area is covered and undisturbed, the exposure potential should be minimal, if any.

Nonetheless, if you would like EPA to conduct a visual inspection, feel free to contact us by calling the field office at (215) 654-5190 or by visiting the our trailer located at the former park.

Some of the information we will need is the following:

NPL Listing - September 3, 2008

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today proposed the addition of the BoRit Asbestos Site in Ambler, Pa. to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL).

The national priorities list is a national list of sites where hazardous contaminants could impact public health and/or the environment. NPL sites undergo a thorough investigation to determine the full nature and extent of contamination. EPA or the parties responsible for the contamination then address whatever risks the sites pose to human health and the environment.

Once a site has been proposed for inclusion to the NPL, there is a 60-day comment period. A final decision on listing the sites will be made after EPA has evaluated and responded to all the public comments in writing. Nationwide, EPA is proposing to add 11 sites to the Superfund list.

For instructions on how to submit your comments, please see the "Proposed Rule" file in the "documents" section. All documents related to the proposal (including the HRS Package) are also posted in the "documents" section.

Contractors hydroseeded all of the bare areas on the entrance berms. The bare area next to the conex box near the entrance was hydroseeded, straw matted, and hydroseeded again. Contractors mow the entrance berms and fill in the bare areas with topsoil. The bare areas were caused by the erosion control socks. Contractors removed the stakes, flags and twine from the shoreline in the pond area. The areas hydroseeded last fall are slowly filling in. Contractors cut open and spread the mulch inside the erosion control socks along the top of the slope by the Wissahickon Creek . . . the vegetation in that area is well established. Contractors set up the sprinklers to water the hydroseeded areas. Contractors remove the erosion control socks along the main entrance of the park . . . the vegetation is well established in that area. Contractors hydroseed the bare patches in the north end of the park area, between Oak Street and Mount Pleasant. Contractors picked up pieces of asbestos-containing-material along the Wissahickon Creek, from Mount Pleasent down to the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association offices. Contractors leveled out the parking lot area by the trailers with stone. Contractors continue to hydro seed the south part of the park, along Chestnut St. Contractors completing the Park Area grading. Contractors hydro seeded along Reservoir Road. Contractors hydro seeded areas that have sub par growth along the emergency spillway by Tannery Run. Contractors spread clean fill on low areas of the park.
