On August 11, 2010, EPA received notification from the PADEP regarding a 20,000 gallon spill of oil into the Shenango River from the Duferco Farrell Corp facility in Farrell, Mercer County, PA. The discharge occurred when workers at the Duferco Farrell facility were pumping the oil from a “basement oil cellar” into a storage tank. After a few hours of pumping, the workers noticed that the level in the tank was not rising and upon further investigation determined that the oil was not going into the tank but was being discharged into the river. Duferco Farrell made notifications to the PADEP and Mercer County EMA. Reports indicated there was a visible sheen and brown emulsified oil on the surface of the river and that Duferco had deployed boom at two locations, a vac truck was on-scene and a cleanup contractor was en-route. .
