Lafayette City Fire Department (Lafayette, Walker County, GA) requested assistance at a large warehouse fire in the center of town. The Old Barwick Mill Plant located at 412 McLemore Street is fully involved. Initial reports from the Fire Chief indicates that there may be two 10,000 gallon above ground storage tanks of oil and a 10,000 gallon tank of a latex product threatened or involved in the fire as well as numerous drums of dangerous goods or hazardous substances. There have been reports of containers/drums bulging or detonating within the fire. The runoff from the fire is being collected in a bermed area on the southeast corner of the property next to the Chattooga River. Contingences to manage the water are being considered at this time and to protect the river. OSC Brian Englert, Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team Contractors and Regional Readiness Center Staff are responding with personnel and equipment to preform air and surface water monitoring.
