On November 16th 2023 at approximately 0100, the local fire department and the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) responded to a fire at the abandoned Ballouville Mill. The mill is located at 248 Ballouville Road in Killingly, CT. Responders initially believed the building to be empty. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. This incident occurred in the US EPA Area of Operation (AOR).
CT DEEP responders were on the scene with air monitoring equipment during the fire. CT DEEP contacted EPA at 0900 on November 16 and during initial coordination with CT DEEP it was determined that EPA support was not necessary at the time. Additional notifications were made to the EPA Brownfields Program. The town hired a demolition contractor and demolition work was completed November 17th. The State of Connecticut and local government are the lead organizations for this response.
